With your auto-guide in hand, walking through the massive doors you will discover the Redoutable. The pride of the French Navy and first in a series of 6 nuclear missile-launching submarines (SNLE), this vessel was put into service on March 29th 1967 by General De Gaulle.
Step by step, you will enter into the bowels of this vessel, 128 long and 10.2 metres wide. If you are surprised by how narrow the corridors are, just try to imagine life on board with two crews of 135 men, changing shifts 24 hours a day for missions of up to 70 days.
From the machine room up to the bunks, via the infirmary or the bridge with its emblematic telescope, you will be completely submersed !
After your 35-minute visit, you'll be ready to head for the dock.
At the end of the giant-sized dock, you will discover this Titan of the seas from a new angle. The imposing view before you will take your breath away! The information panels will describe how the Redoutable and its 128 metres was installed in a space of only 136 metres long, how this nuclear-propulsion submarine works and even what happens to the rubbish generated by its crew. What's a "miss 1" or a 'golden ear'? ...all will be explained!
The Redoutable spent 90,000 hours underwater and travelled 1,270,000 kilometres, the equivalent of 32 times around the Earth!
