A few words on the Cité de la Mer…
This themed site was opened on 29th April 2002 in the old Transatlantic Harbour Terminal in Cherbourg, an Art deco masterpiece.
The permanent exhibitions give the opportunity to go on an original visit where the museography and multimedia techniques used help bring to life underwater adventures.
The visit is organised around four main parts:
The Redoutable
Discovery of the Redoutable, the largest visitable submarine in the world; the new area showing latest generation films of submarines: 'From the Redoutable to the Terrible' and 'The submarines of yesterday and tomorrow'; simulators training visitors in a 3D mission on board our submarine the Furtif.
Exploring the depths of the sea
La Cité de la Mer has recreated an abyssal base with several diving vessels and COMEX mini-submersibles in an area dedicated to Henri Germain Delauze, pioneer of the great depths.
So many things inviting you to come and discover the big and small Stories behind conquering of the great depths.
The Abyssal aquarium
At 11 metres deep, you have before you the biggest aquarium in Europe. You will be literally fascinated by the marine fauna straight from a Tahitian atoll. A complete change of scene..

" Walking into the depths " is an unforgettable experience in unique environment which is La Cité de la Mer in Cherbourg.
La Cité de la Mer has asked Captain Glass to take you down to the abysses on board the Hadalys to discover landscapes of oases and extraordinary creatures.
