Normandie exhibition - La Cit� de la Mer

To celebrate the release of the comic book Normandie, Paquebot de L�gende, by the publishing house Gl�nat, La Cit� de la Mer are proud to present a unique exhibition dedicated to the liner Normandie, created by the association French Lines.

The Normandie exhibition will be installed in Salle des Pas Perdus at the Transatlantic passenger terminal. Visitors will be able to go back in time, following the incredible history of this celebrated cruise ship with recitals and photos: from the Compagnie G�n�rale Atlantique through to its inaugural voyage as well as its Blue Riband award and tragic end. Over and above Cherbourg�s transatlantic background, the Passenger terminal and the Normandie have a very strong link: the famous Parisian decorator Marc Simon created all of the interior Art Deco work in the terminal as well as part of the work on board the Normandie. A few pieces of furniture from the Passenger terminal will be presented as part of the exhibition.

Dedication of the comic book, Saturday 22^nd and Sunday 23^rd from 1.30 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the exhibition hall.

Let�s follow two characters : Zo�, a little girl, and Professor Arronax (taken in Captain Nemo aboard the Nautilus) and let�s go through a new discovery, and a new vision of the seabed, during a walk of more than two hours.

Inside the Permanent Exhibitions Pavilion, three floors of history, discovery and fascination available to you with this fun and educational speech.

First of all, let�s return on the seabed�s legends; then go towards the aquariums and their dazzling species!

Then, understand the exploitation of the seabed, the hydrothermal sources, coral and many other topics with the release of scientifics� interviews as Daniel Desbruy�res, Robert Ballard, or Fran�ois Sarano, the great protector of the oceans.

At the ground floor, under the Abyssal Aquarium, the exciting adventure of Henri-Germain Delauze, a pioneer of the deep diving begins.

Finally, in the Great Gallery of Men and Machines, discover every machine : Nautilus, Alvin, Archim�de, Total Sub� Professor Arronax and Zo� explain you their running, the epic of those brave aquanauts and the mythic dives of submarines; with new anecdotes such as the one of Brigitte R�naldi, who dived aboard the Nautilus for the discovery of the wreck of Titanic in 1987�

12 inhabited submarines are waiting for you in the Great Hall as from the 29^th January at La Cit� de la Mer! From Fulton�s Nautilus, which dived to ten meters in 1800 to the Archimedes which reached 9454 meters in 1962, La Cit� de la Mer offers in 2011 a dive through the international history of the Man�s adventure under the sea.

New submarines (real vessels, models or as photographic representation) and also, new testimonials will enable you to know more about these extreme divers who challenged the oceans to conquer this world which contains many more mysteries to solve�

Through their inhabited sphere, red wire between machines, which allows humans to dive deeply and safely, you will be able to imagine the disturbing conditions of diving on board.

Thanks to French, American, Russian or Japanese inhabited vessels, La Cit� de la Mer enables you to apprehend in one place the rare and experienced international equipment.
