Titanic, return to Cherbourg : a collection of artefacts

42 artefacts from the excavation field around the wreck of the Titanic are on display at the heart of the permanent tour “Titanic, Return to Cherbourg” permanent exhibition at La Cité de la Mer.

This new collection includes personal effects of passengers found in their luggage, items belonging to crew members or even the liner’s crockery bearing the White Star Line’s logo.

Among passengers’ souvenirs, you will discover:

  • Marian Meanwell, 3rd class on Titanic, former modiste and dressmaker: the photograph of a lady, certainly a relative, a bottle, her parents’ marriage certificate and a receipt for Birmingham Theatre Royal.
  • William Hyne, Titanic’s baker. His suitcase, brought to the surface in 2000, shows his shirt collar, a glass phial and a razor case
  • William Murdoch was also a crew member. Among the artefacts, a leather bag bearing his initials. Several clues suggest that it may well be his, containing a smoking pipe or even a uniform button

Other artefacts belonging to unidentified passengers, are displayed in showcases, as a bracelet, a liqueur decanter with hand-painted floral design or even a porcelain watering can. This strange little object was a favorite of Paul-Henri Nargeolet, the greatest Titanic specialist, who died in 2023.

Some of the finest crockery demonstrates the high level of service delivered to passengers in terms of gastronomy aboard. The White Star Line liner was synonymous with elegance and comfort for all classes of passengers. On a crystal liqueur decanter, on a crystal glass, you can guess the company logo…
